A Heartwarming Collection of Christmas Stories and Reflections from Max Lucado

These stories-like your favorite Christmas ornaments-come in all shapes and sizes. They unfold in a variety of settings, from ancient Bethlehem to rural England. In the mystery of Christmas, Max writes, we find its majesty. The mystery of how God became flesh, why he chose to come, and how much he must love his people. Such mysteries can never be solved, just as love can never be diagrammed. Christmas is best pondered, not with logic, but imagination.

    $12.99

When I started thinking about my poetry book I decided to write about things that I love and enjoy so much. I feel for poems come out right and enjoyable the poet has to be genuine and true about her feelings and what to write about and word must come from the heart. Also the vocabulary and expressions used must reflect a mastery of the language to choose the most suitable words that will be great match perfect for each situation, that is a skill and a gift that God had blessed me with an I am thankful for that. I have also chosen my subjects and situations based on the simple things in life that people enjoy and find it close to their hearts because I believe that when it comes to poetry the simpler the better. I have also written about a range of topics to make it exciting and give the reader the experience and enjoy different situations and reflections, after all variety is the spice of life. Some of the topics that I picked for my reflections and poems were included animals, nature, cultures and values, and faraway places. I am a huge animal lover and you will feel that throughout this book, I spend a lot of my time looking at them, watching animals and wildlife shows, going to zoos and aquariums. The animal world that shares our planet, there is so much beauty and serenity in connection with nature and learn many lessons in struggle, hard work, and motherhood. However, not everything in the animal kingdom is rosy fairy tales of beautiful fur, colorful feathers, and fluffy cubs, there are also a lot of savagery, blood, and cruel fight for survival. I felt to covey that world as it is just like it takes place in nature in a very unique way that hasn’t been described before that that reader will find interesting and amusing. In Thieves of the Sky, Dracula of the Jungle, I smell Blood, Gentle Giants, and Racing the Wind I spoke of the beauty and of heartwarming sights and discipline of these animals, but at the same time I uncovered their schemes and manipulation in stalking their Prays and tearing them apart in cruel and bloody manner as a mean of survival and domination of the strong over the venerable. In a related topic, but also a matter of principle I wanted to make my voice heard to add that to the many calls and protests against the brutality and savagery oh bullfighting in Spain and other places. The torture and sedition that is inflicted on that poor creature is beyond comprehension. I wanted to portray that in an imaginativ

  • Miracles We Have Seen

    $16.95

This is a book of miracles–medical events witnessed by leading physicians for which there is no reasonable medical explanation, or, if there is, the explanation itself is extraordinary. These dramatic first-person essays detail spectacular serendipities, impossible cures, breathtaking resuscitations, extraordinary awakenings, and recovery from unimaginable disasters. Still other essays give voice to cases in which the physical aspects were less dramatic than the emotional aspects, yet miraculous and transformational for everyone involved. Positive impacts left in the wake of even the gravest of tragedies, profound triumphs of heart and spirit.
Preeminent physicians in many specialties, including deans and department heads on the faculties of the top university medical schools in the country describe, in everyday language and with moving testimony, their very personal reactions to these remarkable clinical experiences.
Among the extraordinary cases poignantly recounted by the physicians witnessing them:

A priest visiting a hospitalized patient went into cardiac arrest on the elevator, which opened up on the cardiac floor, right at the foot of the cardiac specialist, at just the right moment.
A tiny premature baby dying from irreversible lung disease despite the most intensive care who recovered almost immediately after being taken from his hospital bed and placed on his mother’s chest.
President John F. Kennedy’s son Patrick, who died shortly after birth, and whose disease eventually led to research that saved generations of babies.
A nine-year-old boy who was decapitated in a horrific car accident but survived without neurological damage.
A woman who conceived and delivered a healthy baby–despite having had both of her fallopian tubes surgically removed.
A young man whose only hope for survival was a heart transplant, but just at the moment he developed a potentially fatal complication making a transplant impossible, his own heart began healing itself.
A teenage girl near death after contracting full-blown rabies who became the first patient ever to recover from that disease after an unexpected visit by Timothy Dolan, the man who would go on to become the Archbishop of New York.
A Manhattan window-washer who fell 47 stories–and not only became the only person ever to survive a fall from that height, but went on to make a full recovery.

This book is a collection of short stories of travel, adventure, and growing up as an Italian Catholic. The author tells stories of her great grandparents that came to America, and how it was literally murder getting out of Sicily. Coming from being poor peasants in Italy, America promised to provide the family with the opportunities to become wealthy aristocrats, even if one had to bootleg whiskey to do it. Shocked by the faith-shaking realization that nuns were actually human beings underneath all that garb, she was still hopeful that the pope would be coming to dinner after she purchased the best china available. With some Italian traditions that just wouldn’t die and too many relatives that did, Annette relates stories of their lives and deaths with wit and humor.

These stories make profound theological points in a way that will inspire you, bring tears to your eyes, and recommit you to Christ’s church.
John P. Burgess Professor of Systematic Theology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary

In these stories of Christmas we will discover new meaning and experience God’s presence. In short, these stories are not only about incarnation; they become an exercise in the truth that God is with us in Jesus Christ.
Will Willimon, Author, United Methodist Bishop, and Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School, Durham, North Carolina

So often the good news of the Gospel is communicated best through story. Throughout life, it is in the interruptions and the surprises of life that God most often makes his goodness and grace known. In this season of Advent and Christmas, when expectations are high, these stories are an invitation to be open to the ever surprising ways in which the incarnate Lord may become present to us. Surprised by Christmas: Stories Through Advent and Christmas consists of twelve heart-warming short stories, using vignettes of Christmastime experience of ordinary people to illustrate the spiritual meaning of Christ’s birth for today. These are stories which seek to connect the meaning of the incarnation to people’s everyday experiences surrounding the Christmas season, especially in regard to family life.

Surprised by Christmas is an excellent resource for clergy and their congregations, as well as other interested readers of Christmas stories. They may also be used in community organizations and workshops. Author Richard Reifsnyder wrote these stories with the intention to provoke thought about the meaning of the incarnation in an accessible, non-theological way. Readers will be able to identify with many of the situations in these stories and find encouragement in their own celebration of Christmas, even with all the messiness of life.

In a world that oftentimes seems to have lost its moorings, where knowledge increases at such a dizzying rate that no one can keep up with it, it is good to back away from it all in islands of serenity-and ponder the deeper meaning.

Which brings each of us to the ultimate question: Where in all this nonstop chaotic frenzy of hype and self-promotion is God?

When we do this, inevitably our thoughts travel back, back, back in time to a lowly stable in a little hamlet called Bethlehem, inside which a baby was being born. And high overhead: a blazing star.

Christmas was also born that day.

  • True You : Overcoming Self Doubt And Using Your Voice

    $16.00

Some women forget their story matters. Our culture does a great job making women feel that our stories aren’t important enough to be told. They are not the funny, feel-good, fairy-tale ending stories that we think matter. We struggle telling the painful chapters and taking off our masks. So what can we do to share the true stories of who we are, and why should we do it? Experienced ministers Adele Ahlberg Calhoun and Tracey Bianchi give us a reason: Each of us gets a one-of-a-kind unrepeatable life . . . No matter what has happened to you-there is holy wisdom to be found in your story. Your life matters and isn’t just about you. In fact, it could change the course of another’s life. Your one crazy mixed up unrepeatable life is for your friends, family, your kids, your neighborhood, your God and the generations to come. But telling our stories is not easy. We doubt the significance of our journeys, refusing to share-and be-ourselves. But God wants to release each of us to find our true you underneath all of the expectations and conflicting priorities. This book serves as a companion as we find ourselves, our sense of community and our identity in God. Designed to take you deeper with God on your own or with a group of sisters, use this book to reclaim your voice. At the end of each chapter you will find a set of practices and journaling questions, as well as links to other encouraging resources. Will you tell your story?

  • Unlikely Heroes : 37 Inspiring Stories Of Courage And Heart From The Animal

    $13.95

In her heartwarming New York Times bestsellers Unlikely Friendships and last year’s Unlikely Loves, Jennifer Holland revealed the surprising emotional bonds that exist between animals of different species. Her books spent dozens of weeks on bestseller lists and caught the attention of major media from CBS This Morning to USA Today. Why? Because she opened our eyes to the rich inner lives of animals, showing us that the power of love and friendship is not for humans only.

In Unlikely Heroes, Ms. Holland uncovers and celebrates yet another side of animals that we often think belongs primarily to people?heroism, that indefinable quality of going above and beyond, often for altruistic reasons, often at great personal risk. These 37 inspiring true tales show animals whose quick acts have saved lives, like the pod of dolphins who protected swimmers in New Zealand from a great white shark by forming a screen around them. There are stories of animals who simply and unselfishly give, like Rojo the llama, who shines his very special light of lovingkindness on the elderly patients in an Oregon rehab center.

And there are compelling stories of heroic resilience: like Naki’o, the abandoned puppy who lost all four paws to frostbite but found the grit not only to overcome that terrible hardship but to reclaim the joy of life?that’s him, smiling on the cover of the book.

  • West Texas Christmas Stories

    $13.99

An anthology of more than 30 Christmas stories–short and upbeat, set in West Texas or by West Texas writers–that evoke memories of warm and humorous holiday moments.

Christmas is our most cherished holiday for many reasons. It tugs at the heart and evokes memories. It’s a time for laughter and joy. Christmas is about faith and family and friendship, about Jesus and also Santa Claus, about giving and receiving, about anticipating and experiencing.

And Christmas is about story-telling. Every one of us probably has a Christmas story or two worth telling–the time everything turned out perfect, or not so perfect; the best Christmas ever; a remembered disappointment; a spiritual encounter; a lesson observed and woven deep into the fabric of our own personal quilt of values; an incident so funny we still laugh out loud years later recalling it.

The stories here do all of the above–and maybe more. Some may elicit a smile or a chuckle, others may find you wiping away a tear, while others may cause your mind to drift back to moments and memories catalogued deep within your soul. Some are by writers who may be familiar; others by writers you haven’t read until now. Some are fiction, others non-fiction, though in the spirit of Christmas it may not always be possible to separate one from the other.

Though diverse, the pieces in this book have a few things in common. Geography, for one–they are either set in West Texas or they are the product of West Texans putting pen to paper or, more likely, fingers to computer keyboard. Length, for another–none of these stories take very long to read. And, finally, all are intended to help make this Christmas a little more meaningful.

  • Little Salty To Cut The Sweet

    $15.99

There’s nothing quite like family-for good or bad. But in a world where we sometimes know more about the Kardashians than we do the people sleeping right down the hall, it’s easy to forget that walking through life with our family offers all sorts of joy wrapped up in the seemingly mundane. There’s even a little bit of sacred sitting smack-dab in the middle of the ordinary. And since time’s-a-wastin’, we need to be careful that we don’t take our people-and their stories-for granted. Whether it’s a marathon bacon-frying session, a road trip gone hysterically wrong, or a mother-in-law who makes every trip to the grocery store an adventure, author Sophie Hudson reminds us how important it is to slow down and treasure the day-to-day encounters with the people we love the most.

Written in the same witty style as Sophie’s BooMama blog, A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet is a cheerful, funny, and tender account of Sophie’s very Southern family. It’s a look into the real lives of real people-and a real, loving God right in the middle of it all.

  • Tales From India

    $9.05

Dr. William Jeffcoat has gathered dozens of diverse short stories from India. These come from the varied world of nature found in that large land, from the ancient and more recent history of one of the world’s oldest civilations, and from fables passed down through the generations in the families found there.

There is something here to interest any reader. Thought-provoking challenges are mixed with humor, and human interest stories will stir the heart.

Above all, each story illustrates a biblical truth in a forceful way. The way of salvation is shown beginning with the most basic truths that God is the Creator and that sin hinders His desire to communicate with His creation and fellowship with those He loves. The necessity of Jesus’ sacrifice is made plain, and the reader is invited to receive the gift purchased by that sacrifice.

This is a treasury of illustrations to use in witnessing and a powerful witness in itself when given to unbelieving friends.
